Drought Tolerant Demonstration Garden

Peak Season: Spring, Winter

This garden aims to showcase the wide-variety of drought-tolerant plants available to gardeners. From the obvious choices of succulents and cacti to sages, agastache, and poppies. This garden utilizes a blend of natives and non-natives. Some of the standout natives are the prairie sage that spreads across the garden, the Texas bluebonnets that pop up in early spring, and the rain lilies that only flower right after a heavy rain. This garden is mostly full-sun, with pockets of shade and part-shade thanks to the large post oak and the state champion Arizona cypress. Other tress featured in the garden are a chittamwood, mesquite, and a pinyon pine. The yuccas are evergreen, providing gorgeous color in the winter alongside the evergreens. There is no irrigation in the garden, so new plantings are watered in by hand for the first year and then it’s all up to nature.
