Scientific Name: Atractosteus spatula

Alligator gars are the largest species of gar fish. They grow up to 300 pounds and 10 feet long. They live in rivers, streams, and lakes throughout the southern United States.

Alligator gars are fierce predators. They swim slowly a few feet below their target before grabbing the prey with their enormous jaws. In addition to smaller fishlike carp and shad, they will eat turtles, birds and even small mammals.
