Bird populations are declining in Oklahoma and around the world because of habitat loss and light pollution. The OKC Zoo helps Oklahoma birds by funding and participating in bird surveys and habitat restoration through its Round Up for Conservation program, while also providing habitat on Zoo grounds that supports more than 40 wild bird species. Zoo staff work with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Sutton Avian Research Center, and The Nature Conservancy to study breeding birds, track populations, and collect data that helps guide conservation efforts throughout Oklahoma.

Staff also join in global community science projects like the Great Backyard Bird Count, which helps scientists better understand bird populations and migration patterns. You can help birds by purchasing Bird Friendly® coffee in the Zoo’s Safari Gifts shop. This coffee is sustainably produced by certified farms that protect bird habitat.
