The Guatemalan beaded lizard is one of the rarest lizards in the world and lives only in the dry forests of eastern Guatemala. It is critically endangered because its habitat is being lost to farming, urban development, wildfires, and wildlife trafficking. To help protect this species, the OKC Zoo works with FUNDESGUA, a conservation organization in Guatemala to help support research, habitat restoration, and education programs that benefit this species. Zoo staff have traveled to Guatemala to help restore dry forest areas and work with local communities.
