Asian elephants are majestic giants that live in the forests and grasslands of Asia. Sadly, fewer than 40,000 are left in the wild. Their biggest problems are losing the habitats where they live and bumping into trouble with the people who share their land. As more humans move into elephant country, it gets harder for elephants and people to be good neighbors.

The Oklahoma City Zoo leads the Sri Lanka Elephant Project, where scientists study how wild elephants behave, eat, and react to people. What they learn helps find smart, science-based ways for people and elephants to share space safely. The Zoo is also part of the AZA SAFE Asian Elephant team, a group of zoos working together to protect this species. You can help, too! Next time you check out at a Zoo shop or restaurant, “round up” your bill for the Round Up for Conservation Fund. Even a few extra cents add up to a real difference for elephants in Sri Lanka.
